Jacob 2000

Jacob 2000

Jacob was born in January 2000. He was born very prematurely at 27 weeks. He weighed 2lb 8oz.

I remember the week before looking at baby clothes, ignoring all the pre-term stuff. Then on the Thursday my wife was admitted into hospital with pains. On the Friday she was diagnosed as having pre-eclampsia, and she was given steroid injections so that baby's lungs could develop. On the Saturday we visited the Special Care Baby Unit, although the baby would most likely hold out for another five or six weeks. On the Sunday, he was born.

The final act of giving birth was over relatively quickly - the midwife only managed to get one glove on completely before he literally 'popped out'. We were given the opportunity to hold him before he was taken to Special Care. He was tiny - 2lb 8oz. It is hard to imagine now how small he was. For the weight, think: a bag of sugar. For the length, think: a bag of sugar.

He was in Special Care for 6 weeks. It was a very stressful time in the main - knowing you had a baby but he wasn't home with you; constant trips to the hospital; not being able to pick up your baby. This photo was taken was taken when he was about 3 weeks old - he was out of the incubator and into a heated cot. He had to be fed through the tube (LHS of photo) and was monitored through various wires (most are hidden in the photographs). He was very lucky to have had the steriod injections before being born. I doubt he would be with us today otherwise. I clearly remember one day that the Special Care Baby Unit was closed to all families - except one. It was a sad day, but I remember feeling thankful that we were not the parents that actually had a reason for going in.

Jacob was 10 years old this year. To look at him, you wouldn't know that he was born a tiny, early baby. He suffers no breathing difficulties, no learning difficulties, no physical difficulties. Nothing. Except that he now has a tendency to be late for everything! As a special treat, I took him to Paris for his 10th Birthday. The second photo was taken almost exactly 10 years after the first.
